National
Nurses Day is always celebrated in May. In 1974, President Nixon
proclaimed the week following National Nurses Day as “National
Nurse Week” . It is to recognize over 2.6 million licensed RNs,
690,000 LPNs, and approximately 1.3 million nurses' aides in the
United States for their contributions and commitment they make
to quality health care. Nurses Day is supported by nursing
organizations such as the American Nurses Association, American
Association of Colleges of Nurses, American Organization of
Nurse Executives, and National League for Nursing. The theme for
National Nurses Week 2002 is “Nurses Care for America” and
America cares for its nurses. In a CNN/USA Today/Gallup Poll of
professions held in the highest esteem, nurses nationwide rank
second for their honesty and integrity, with 84% of respondents
rating nurses “high” or “very high”.
INNOVATIONS held an open house on May 8 and mailed out
gift certificates for $35 toward BCLS/ACLS with last weeks
paychecks in order to show our appreciation for all your hard
work. If you were unable to make it, you can look forward to
another open house being held in the fall. We’ll keep you
posted.
Thank you for your dedication, support, and contributions to
the nursing profession.

Nurse's Survey |
Thank you |
|
In this month’s addition of the
Great Lakes Nurse Week, a survey was conducted by Harris
Interactive to learn more about the nursing shortage and the
issues that surround it from the perspective of nurses
themselves. RNs were surveyed on their perceptions of the
shortage and its impact, their experiences in their work
environment and their career plans. The survey was conducted
from October 24 through March 13 among a nationally
representative sample of 7,600 registered nurses, randomly
selected from a list of all RNs licensed to practice in the
United States. 4,108 RNs complete the survey. For more details,
go to
www.nurseweek.com where
you’ll find the entire survey online. |
INNOVATIONS wants to
send out a tremendous thank you to Judy Nachtman, Lois Kopf,
Janice Hardy, Janice Foster, Paul Schroeder, and Brenda Ballard
for referring nurses. Remember, from March 1st through July 1st,
nurse referrals will net you $1000 per RN referral if the
following criteria are met:
- You must be an active HCI employee at the time of the
referral and at the time of referral bonus disbursement.
Active is defined as working an average of 24 hours in the
current or preceding month.
- Your name must be on the application or nurse preference
form to be eligible for the bonus.
- Referred nurse must complete new hire processing and be
accepted for a per diem or contract position.
On July 2nd, the referral program will revert
back to $500 per referral.
For more information, please call Service Coordinators in
Brighton: Kim, Lisa, or Mary 877-765-7544 or in Allen Park:
Angie at 877-534-0509. |

To be a Nurse... |
|
AFLAC |
|
To be a nurse requires dedication,
With years of study and preparation.
I pray for guidance and humbly ask,
That I will do well with this chosen task.
When illness strikes or pain demands,
And a life is placed within my hands,
Give me compassion, knowledge and skill
To do the things that comfort and heal.
Suffering makes patients' fear grow worse
And they seek reassurance from their nurse.
Help me see things from their point of view
And always to know what is best to do.
May I have a part, in some small way,
In restoring good health to someone today.
Let my work be all that I want it to be--
I ask the great healer to work through me.

BCLS/ACLS |

Nurse Facts |
|
In past issues, there has always been a
section of the newsletter reserved for BCLS/ACLS classes that
were coming up. Instead of listing possible classes that might
not even be in your area, you can go to online to the website at
www.cpr-ecc.org. You can
type in the state in which you currently reside and the site
will bring up a list of classes offered for updates on BCLS/ACLS/CPR/AED/PALS.
This way you can view the site first hand and choose the one
that best fits your needs. If you do not have access to the
internet, call your service coordinators in the Brighton office:
Kim or Mary at 800-765-7500. Good luck and have fun! |
There are nearly 2.7 million registered nurses in the
United States. 2.2 million of them are actively employed.
As of November 2001, the Bureau of Labor Statistics
projects that more than one million new nurses will be
needed by the year 2010. The report projects that total
employment will increase by 22.2 million jobs during the
2000-2010 period, rising to 167.8 million. Health care
practitioners and technical occupations are expected to
account for 1.6 million new jobs during that period.
Registered nurses, which represent the largest occupation in
this group, should account for more than a third of those
new jobs.
The nation's nurses rank second for their honesty and
integrity, with 84 percent of Americans rating them "high"
or "very high," according to a 2001 CNN/USA Today/Gallup
Poll. Firefighters, who were given high ratings by 90
percent of Americans, displaced nurses from the poll's top
slot this year, following the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
Nurses had previously rated first for two years in a row
after being added to the list in 1999.
